Why Choose the OASC?
The TCDN OASC offers families a safe, supportive program that meets the changing developmental needs of older school age children. Providing a positive social/emotional climate, activities that focus on children’s choice and interests, and engaging relationships with teachers, children are productively and happily involved in their time after school.
About the Program
TCDN’s OASC program provides after school care to children in 4th-6th grade who attend SRS, WES, NPE, or SHMS. Children may also enroll from outside the Wallingford Swarthmore School District. The program begins 2:45 PM when 6th grade children from middle school arrive. Fourth and fifth grade children arrive from three elementary schools between 3:45 – 4:15.
As keeping the interest of children this age is more of a challenge, the OASC teachers bring a sense of humor, along with understanding and respect for the unique developmental needs of pre-adolescent children, to their work. Trusting children to make decisions on their own and giving children more responsibility within the programming at the OASC, helps prepare them for the time later in middle school when they may be responsible for themselves at home.
Curriculum
Taking into consideration pre-adolescent children’s increased need for independence, children have opportunities to decide how they spend their time and help to plan their own activities. Children are able to socialize without close adult supervision and are encouraged to pursue creative outlets and develop new skills. Opportunities to engage in “real work” and utilize technology are also included. Outings and community exploration are incorporated whenever possible. Children have time for homework and teachers are able to provide help, as needed. Teachers work with families to negotiate realistic program guidelines for homework.
"Our son has been having a great experience at OASC this year. From outdoor play, to indoor games, his afternoons are enriched with time with both peers and attentive adults." - OASC Parent
